Smart insole embedded into your shoes with GPS and Pressure Sensing

Monitoring for aging population with dementia without making it invasive.

Aging brings unique challenges, particularly in health and mobility, which can lead to isolation and reduced independence. The Sensole project aims to address these issues by empowering elderly individuals to confidently engage in outdoor activities while providing caregivers with peace of mind. Sensole is an IoT-enabled smart insole that seamlessly integrates into any shoe, using pressure and light sensors, machine learning, and real-time data transmission to monitor user activity and location.

I was responsible for the integrated with GPS location tracking and cloud-based communication and coding the web app for caregivers with real-time updates via a web app and SMS notifications. I collaborated with my teammates to combine the electronics and the machine learning model into the system.

The system combines three Force Sensitive Resistors (FSRs) and a Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) to detect activity and ensure accurate readings. These inputs are processed by a Particle Photon microcontroller, which uses a machine learning model developed in Edge Impulse to classify activities like walking, standing, or sitting. Integrated with GPS location tracking and cloud-based communication, Sensole provides caregivers with real-time updates via a web app and SMS notifications.
